Can I go blonde when my hair is dyed dark brown?

My hair is regularly dyed dar brown but I really want to go lighter. I don't expect to go a full head of blonde but will it work OK if I have a lot of blonde highlights put it in? I'm just worried about it going orange or breaking off!
