How long does the pain from wisdom tooth extraction usually last?

I had all four of my impacted wisdom teeth surgically removed on Wednesday morning. 3 days post op and I'm still in pain. I've been following all the instructions from my dentist, except I stopped taking Vicodin due to the nausea it caused me. While on the Vicodin I didn't experience any pain but now that I'm off of it it hurts pretty bad and I'm wondering if this is still normal 3 days post op. I've been watching for dry socket, but the pain seems to be coming from all of the extraction sites and isn't extreme. Plus, I can still see where the stitches are and there doesn't seem to be any exposed bone or foul smell associated with dry socket. Is it normal to still have pain and swelling or could I be in the process of developing dry socket? What are the early symptoms of dry socket?
